4BR Large Historic Hidden Gem in Norwich with Pool
The E.A. Huntington home, built in 1717 in historic Beanhill, Norwichtown, with its stone walls, warmly welcomes visitors to 4,100 sq ft of airy space. Set on 3.5 acres of land, this property provides privacy while leaving room for plenty of activities, including an in-ground covered pool, a basketball hoop, soccer, and exploring the land. 4BR w/2.5 baths, can be combined with 2BR cottage rental. The pool is shared between the two listings. The property is less than a 5-minute walk to the Marriott hotel, an 8-minute drive to Mohegan Sun. A 30-minute drive to Mystic, CT, and about a 40-minute drive to Misquamicut beach in Rhode Island. The drive to Newport, RI is about an hour.
This is the perfect place for a family gathering with plenty of bedrooms and yard space. The main house can be rented in combination with the small 2BR cottage to provide even more accommodations.
The covered in-ground pool is not heated. The pool is open end of May through the end of September, with the season opening and closing being weather-dependent. The pool area will heat up with the sun, but only so much on cooler days.
There is a small gym with a treadmill, rowing machine, weights, and stretch band. Adjacent to that you will find the enclosed back porch with a ping pong table.
You will find plenty of yard space to enjoy nature, play sports, and bird watching. There is also a little pond and a little trail.
The property is overall very quiet because it is set back from the street, providing plenty of privacy. However, with the I-395 passing close by, you will have some traffic noise.
The best way to get around is by car. We provide parking for 4 cars. There is a ride & share lot less than a 4-minute drive by the exit/entrance to the I-395
Baby gates, high chair and pack-n-play are available upon request.
There is a cottage on the same property (separate listing). Look for Spacious 2BR Norwich Cottage.
DOGS: We allow our guests to bring their dog(s) as long as they are fixed and house-trained, and friendly. This is out of courtesy for other guests who might be renting the cottage. Guests are responsible for any damage dogs may cause, and urine stains inside the house will require an extra cleaning fee of $150. All dogs must be leashed while on the property! We do not allow cats.
This is a strictly non-smoking property. A cleaning fee of $250 will apply if guests smoke inside the house.
The bedroom are located on the second floor.
No parties in the sense of inviting guests beyond the ones that you booked the home for.

The property was wonderful and the rooms were huge with comfortable beds! Our main issue was just finding all the light switches for each room. Many were covered up or didn’t work. Once we did, though, it was fine. The house is huge and a bit of a maze to find your way around with hallways that go in circles and two stairways. We had fun finding our way and had it down by the end of the weekend! Those of us that used the pool loved it, although the doors to get in were extremely difficult to open, and we loved the big dining room table when we played games, the huge comfy couch for watching TV and plenty of counter space in the kitchen. We were warned to schedule and spread out our showers so as to preserve the hot water but didn’t have any problems with running out. There was plenty of parking and the area was very quiet. The AC was nice and definitely needed.
The Good: Very clean, large, unique home built in 1700’s with updated kitchen and baths. If you like old homes with tons of character, this is for you.
- 4 BR’s, 5 beds and 2.5 baths
- large den with sectional couch for 8 adults and a large flat screen
- separate LR seats 5 with working wood burning fireplace
- the house has everything you need, including coffee for coffee maker, and awesome bath towels
- Small gym
- 10 miles to Mohegan Sun
The Bad:
- Host messaged me a couple hours before arrival that the stovetop works but the oven does not work, and there’s a toaster oven. If we needed an oven, we could use the oven in the cottage behind the house (inconvenient).
- The house’s one thermostat on 1st floor read 51 degrees when we arrived 4 pm (and it felt even colder on 2nd floor where BRs and 2 full baths are). Sink water did not get hot so we couldn’t take showers as planned. Our wives were not happy. We turned thermostat up to 67 and waited about a hour but thermostat only went up to 53 degrees.
- We could not open flue in indoor LR fireplace.
- The outside gas fireplace propane tank was empty.
- No lights in main floor half bath worked.
- The ping pong table is very small
We contacted the host, who called the property manager, who arrived in 30 mins, and told us the home will warm up but it “takes a while for a house this old”. He left to fill up propane tank, returned an hour later, house was at 55 degrees. He checked radiators in all rooms and said the radiators were starting to get warm on 1st floor and will eventually get warm on 2nd floor and to give it time. He also showed us how to open flu. At 7 pm, we went out to eat and warm up, returned at midnight, and the house warmed up to 66 degrees and the water was hot.
- Property Manager said fuse / circuit for main floor half bath must have blown, but he did not check fuse box in basement to try to fix.
A rental house in March should obviously be warm for guests upon arrival; it’s unreasonable to wait 6+ hours for the house and water to get acceptably warm. The outside temp was about 40-45 degrees, so if it was a colder night, it likely would’ve taken longer for the house to warm up. Future guests need to have the Property Manager or Host turn the thermostat on / up the night before arrival. We would rent the home again but we’d insist that the heat be turned on the night before.
This is a very old homestead from the colonial era, beautifully maintained and updated. We enjoyed both the house and exploring the woods. We also enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving dinner with family in area. Very comfortable house, and the owner and property manager are very helpful.
The house and property on Huntington Ave are just as listed. Thank you to Ivonne for allowing our family the opportunity to stay in her family's historic estate, the house and grounds are beautiful! Our son and grandsons enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. Everyone had plenty of places to relax and unwind. The location of the property was ideal to several attractions, Mystic Seaport and Aquarium, Essex Steam Train, and the Sea Unicorns Baseball games were a few our family enjoyed. Ivonne is a great host, she kept us informed with any information we needed, made sure we had plenty of supplies, gave us great suggestions for restaurants and things to do in the area, and left our family a gift card for a dinner. We would recommend this house to anyone wanting to vacation in that area of Connecticut.
We rented this property to be within 45 minutes of all family and because it was dog friendly. It is clean and comfortable and convenient to grocery/gas/highway. We enjoyed staying in a historic house with modern conveniences. Spent a lot of time lounging in front of the big TV.
This property was amazing. Very large, plenty of space, lots of activities. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are going to the Mohegan sun or anywhere else in the area. No complaints and we would definitely stay again if we end up back in Connecticut
What a great place to have a family gathering. We stayed here for my son's wedding. We loved the historic space and the quirkiness. So many activities that was available for every one. Wonderful stay.
My family of six adults and four teenagers had a great five days at the Huntington House. We rented the main house and the Red Cottage. Bring pool toys and enjoy the enclosed pool even on a rainy day (feels like a heated pool because of the enclosure). The house is filled with lovely antiques( not too precious to worry with kids) as well as contemporary furniture throughout. We cooked almost every meal in the well stocked kitchen and watched The Olympics on the huge TV. The bathrooms are renovated and stocked with spa towels and abundance of soaps, shampoos...! The beautiful grounds are great for games as well as many settings to read and gather. Enjoy!
