Yin House is the mirror reflection of her neighbor 421. Whoever built the two houses used one blueprint. They built one, flipped the blueprint, and built the second. Across the street is the former James Street Tavern, which has been everything to GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), a civil war veterans’ association, the center of labor groups, a speakeasy, and a Jazz Club. The tavern was built in 1890. I like to think they were owned by two Civil War veterans, brothers, who wanted to be next to each other and across the street from a friendly bar. I purchased the property in 1996 after it had just been upgraded with all new wiring, plumbing, windows, and walls. She was converted from a single-family home to a two-family home. Traces of her origin still remain; for example, you can see the drain on the porch, which is now the sunroom. I think the built-in cabinets in the bedroom are another example. Yin House got another major upgrade over the last two years. New kitchen, bathroom, and floors. Downstairs, both the washer and dryer are new.
