We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Modernist! The home was very clean, artfully styled, and comfortably roomy for our group of 6. It was centrally located within a reasonable drive of Forest Hills, Downtown, 9th Street, and both East and West Campus. Roger was responsive when we had a question. Check in was smooth and as expected. Signage and placards were helpful without being intrusive. We have stayed in several VRBOs that show the wear and tear of guests and owners that care less than they should. Roger clearly cares about the house and this lends itself to an excellent experience for guests. I will certainly consider staying here or another of his properties the next time I’m in town.

The property is just as advertised. It was fresh, clean and well appointed. The attention to detail was apparent. I wish we had stayed longer and will definitely be returning. My only disappointment was that I couldn't take the house home with me!

This place was so beautiful and had everything i needed. I cant be sure if the beauty of the house dulls the neighbourhood or but the other homes felt older. The host was exceptionally wonderful and accommodated my requested check in time which was so great for me so thank you for that! Con neighbours dog kept barking at night....

Lovely Sister Homes for A Linesister Reunion

We booked these sister properties back in the summer for Duke homecoming. We had no idea that our football team would actually be good! Lol... We had two houses for 8 women coming together for the 30th anniversary of our induction to our sorority. The homes - Modernist 5 and Modernist 6 - were new construction in a transitioning neighborhood. The houses are beautifully decorated with a modern design flair. The neighborhood was quiet. We didn't see many folks outside or walking around, though we were gone quite a bit during our two-day stay. We used the bigger unit - Modernist 6 - as our fellowship and dining space. It was easy to walk between the two properties. The location was perfect and about 10 minutes from Duke. Shopping was also nearby, as well as downtown Durham. The neighborhood is in transition, with another new house under construction across the street and 3-4 newer homes on the block. However, there is a pretty shabby house across the street and next door to Modernist 6. No scary. Just very shabby. We never felt unsafe. And, again, both houses were beautiful, new, and shiny... Check-in was easy, the host was even able to accommodate an early check-in for one of the houses. They did so without hesitation and with no extra charge. I highly recommend both Modernist 5 and Modernist 6!

Honestly one of the nicest homes we have stayed in. Feels like a 5 star hotel and someone's personal home combined. Little details, the linen / pillows / towels - all first rate.Roger was always there to answer any questions immediately. We will be baclk for sure.

This is a nice house convenient to downtown Durham and highways. We appreciated several aspects of the property, including the thoughtful touches such as water, coffee, and the well-equipped master bathroom.However, several aspects did not meet expectations. Some areas, including around the toilets and on windowsills, were not as clean as expected. The guest bathroom is quite small considering it serves two of the three bedrooms.We also found the many laminated house rules and wall signs somewhat overwhelming. While the rules themselves were reasonable, the volume and presentation of the notices created a more restrictive atmosphere than we have experienced in other vacation rentals. There were references to penalties including loss of security deposit and early removal for certain infractions.The most disappointing aspect of our experience occurred after checkout. After departure, we were initially informed by the host that damage had been identified to a picture frame. Fortunately we had photo's . We were subsequently informed by VRBO that the concern related instead to Master BR bedframe. A large deduction was then taken from our security deposit. Despite several attempts to obtain clarification, we received no further response from the host.Overall, while the property has positive features it detracted from an otherwise enjoyable family vacation. I advise guests to document the condition of the property on arrival and comm any concerns to host soon as poss.
