"Staff friendly and helpful A customer from the pub immediately offered to help with luggage showing really good connection between local customers and the staff Rooms to a very high standard - no aircon but a fan was made available on request Comfortable bed Car park fairly small but ok Great selection of local beers all properly cellared Unfortunate hiccup at breakfast as gas failed - staff did well to provide an acceptable breakfast in the circumstances We would definitely stay again"

"The hotel was well located for the wedding we attended at clearwell castle and was a good price for the area. However, the whole building suffers from creaky floorboards which make an absolute racket anytime anybody moves, which means once somebody decides to be up, there is no more sleep for you. The beds are also quite hard and the rooms were stuffy with no fans provided. I also thought the bathroom could have benefitted from a deep clean. Overall it was ok, but I wouldn’t go back."

"A very pleasant surprise as a solo guest. Needed an overnight stay for an event in Abergavenny, went with no expectations, just needed a comfortable, clean place and that's what I got. Yes the place needs a bit of tidying up, decorating, updating of furniture but that doesn't bother me as long as everything works for it's purpose which it did. I booked a room at the back with a balcony overlooking the river and the view was wow! On the hottest Bank Holiday for years, I left the French doors slightly open at night and it was so lovely to hear the river and breeze coming in and my morning cup of tea sitting looking at the view. It's a stop off for bikers and I enjoyed having a bit of a chat with them and about their trips and bikes. I didn't eat at the cafe/bar but the breakfasts from what I saw looked good. Bed comfortabke, I slept well. The only thing I would say is that the walls are thin and you can hear people walking on the floor above you, so if you are a light sleeper that may affect you. For me though for the price, I more than likely will be returning with my partner in next couple months for couple nights to take in the Brecon Beacons."

"Great location, lovely staff, comfy bed. Room and furnishings all looking pretty tired and like they could do with an update, and what looked like mould on the bathroom ceiling presumably due to the lack of ventilation there. Breakfast was fairly average. Would stay again but best not to have particularly high expectations."

"Our room (deluxe double) was nice but incredibly hot, as was the weather. It’s an old building & suffers in the heat. Breakfast was very average. We had to ask for croissants. It was apparently first come first served on the buffet table which seemed a bit bizarre. A request to have hollandaise on the side of my eggs Benedict was ignored. Dinner was ok. Staff were helpful. Reception staff get many gold stars for being so helpful & kind re items I carelessly left in the room. Efficient & scrupulously honest. Thankyou. 😊😊😊"

10/10 Excellent

"My family stayed in 2 superior rooms for one night. There is no lift so luggage has to be carried up the stairs. Room 14 was on the first floor and huge, room 30 was on the second floor and slightly smaller. The shower was over the bathtub with a curtain. The staff in the restaurant and elsewhere were excellent and we enjoyed the food (bearing in mind this is a Greene King, not a Michelin starred restaurant :). There are lovely views from the patio where you can have a drink from the bar. For the price, we were very happy with our stay and would certainly recommend the hotel to others."
