"Booked for 1 night stay whilst in Chester, check in was smooth and very friendly staff on reception. We requested a late check out of 1pm and this was accommodated without any issues. We were escorted to the room which was an Executive room but it was extremely dated and curtains needed to be fixed (which we did ourselves). The bathroom had silicone everywhere and just needed to be brought up to date. Did not look like the photos on line at all. It was clean overall and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and all of the food was fresh although the restaurant furniture where we were sat did have cosmetic issues with damaged sofas that were ripped etc. Following breakfast we went back to the room but were startled by the fire alarm which was a test but we were not advised this during check in. At 11:30 the cleaning staff pressed the door bell and entered into the bedroom despite a late check out being booked. When we advised we had a late check out booked she left but then proceeded to bang the hoover against the door and was rude to us so much so that we packed up and left the room and the cleaner was rude once again! We did make a complaint to reception on check out who did credit the late check out fee but this kind of treatment from the cleaning staff at a hotel of this rating is really not acceptable and tarnished our stay. In essence the hotel could be out of this world but it needs investment and better cleaners!"

"We went for breakfast at 9 am, it closed at 10 and the hot food that was out needed replenishing. What was there had been sitting a while. Staff in reception, spa and restaurant were excellent and the best part of the stay. The hotel needs updating, rusty pipes in the pool area, padlocks given to lock lockers, dated decor in rooms etc. It isn’t a 4* property."

"Having read the previous reviews we opted to book this cottage at short notice Unfortunately we had several issues on arrival, the property appeared to have not been vacuumed as carpets are floors were dirty. Both beds were missing the mattress protectors, and the double bed was extremely uncomfortable due to a very soft mattress. Chipped plates in the cupboard and greasy baking trays. The bathroom extractor fan wasn't working and there was an unpleasant smell either from the drains or the soiled toilet brush that urgently needs replacing. I had reached out to the host as soon as possible in the hope things would be rectified but it never happened although they replied to our messages. They had asked if we had taken photos of the floors but unfortunately the ones my daughter had taken were not clear enough so when I retook them the following day the host made excuses because they were not the originals from our first day. I suspect they thought we brought in the dirt ourselves when clearly we don't wear shoes indoors and we had informed the host of this. This is our worst experience of staying in a cottage stay, normally our hosts are so impressed with how we look after their properties and the cleaning team comment how well we leave properties they give us free nights returning stays. It's such a shame as this property would be a delight to stay in if only the host acknowledge our concerns rather than brush them off. Vrba credited our account since the host refused..."
