If you go to Franz Joseph and get a clear day, you need to go for one of the helicopter trips. The views are spectacular and well worth it

Due to lack of snow in the high ranges over many years, the glaciers have receded to an almost unviable state as they recede year on year around a outcrop and as the river has changed direction, you are unable to even walk to get a closer view.

The fraz Josef glacier helicopter ride and track across the glacier was awesome, it was one of the highlights of our trip. A must if you can.

I just loved it and I'm not a mountain man but it's breathtaking scenery and if green lush forests are your outdoorsy thing then go ! NZ'rs are friendly and welcoming,use passing places on LHS but b careful of unmettled roads & running out of space !

Unfortunately weather was unsuitable for helicopter over glacier therefore only able to see by walking tracks. Town very much geared to camping/caravaning. Alice May's restaurant excellent!

"Great little one night stay in heart of Franz Josef. Man at check in was so happy and friendly that I left there smiling. Our room was basic but had everything we needed. Beds weren’t the most comfy but pillows were excellent. Laundry on site at $4 for wash and $4 for dryer was very convenient. Walking distance to everything. Free wifi worked great."
"Great place to stay. Quiet! The desk manager had closed for the night and so we had to ring and she was more than happy to quickly check us in, get everything sorted and was exceeding friendly and accommodating. No complaints! Price was also excellent."
