Goree island, Senegal.

From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.

"I had to clean the room myself, and bedding were offered to be changed only once in the week. Water in the bathroom strangely stopped and led to usage of a bucket instead. Insects were found in the bathroom and the manager explained it was because he has put a pesticide, so it was normal. "Pros: The hosts were lovely and helpful. The property was spacious and beautiful with many little extras not always found in Senegal Vrbo’s like hairdryer and microwave and a washer.
