Progreso de Castro is a town with the category of city located in the Mexican state of Yucatan, specifically in the homonymous municipality that is in the area of metropolitan influence or Region VI of the same state. 1 4
The town carries the official name Progreso de Castro, named after the first promoter of the port in 1884, Juan Miguel Castro.5 It is the main port of the state of Yucatan, Mexico.
It is located in the Gulf of Mexico in the northwest of the state, 36 km north of Merida, the state capital.
Progreso is the base of an important fishing industry and has been consolidated since the construction of the Puerto de Altura, a singular maritime installation consisting of a viaduct that goes into the sea 6.5 km deep to allow depth and allow berthing of ships up to a draft of 34 feet-, as a strategic center for the logistics of exporters and importers of the Yucatan Peninsula. Containers loaded with goods leave Progreso to the world and arrive from abroad to be distributed to the Yucatan Peninsula and other nearby places.7
