Pacific Blue is a relaxed, laid-back beach house with roomy living and dining areas that open out onto a big, sun-soaked balcony. The interiors are simple and comfortable, made for kicking back and soaking up the light that fills the room. From the balcony, you’ll take in 180-degree views across the Pacific Ocean to Barrenjoey Lighthouse and beyond.

This split-level home has kept its mid-century bones, with most of its original features still in place, and a gentle refresh has given it a character all its own. A vine winds its way around the old wrought iron balustrade on the balcony, which doubles as the best seat in the house for watching the ocean, a long lazy lunch, or a slow read of the weekend papers.

The open plan kitchen and living area flows out to both the sunny front deck and the shady paved porch out back, which has a built-in gas BBQ, so you can choose sun or shade and never lose the view. There’s an indoor dining table for 8, and up on the split level, a cosy little nook with a sofa where you can keep half an ear on the dinner table chatter while you start that novel you packed, or sneak in a quiet nap.

With 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (one with a bath, plus a separate toilet), the house suits two families nicely, with plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing. The master and second bedroom each have a queen bed and a small annex off the room, handy for luggage or a porta cot. The third bedroom has 2 single beds and looks out over the leafy garden at the back, a safe spot for little ones who like to be up before their parents.

Freshly painted white throughout, the house makes a simple backdrop for a well-travelled collection of photography, art, found objects and African artefacts. Mid-century touches like the curved central fireplace sit alongside comfy, lived-in furniture to create a calm, easygoing feel. Whether you stay a few nights or a few weeks, this retro beach house is a place to slow down, unwind, and lose a few hours gazing out at the Pacific blue.
