The area is incredibly walkable, with crosswalks and plenty of other people walking around even at night. We felt very safe walking around the area at all times. Versailles as a whole is the perfect epitome of an ideal French city.

When you go to the Palace, do what the locals do and park at the Queens Gate entrance in the Gardens. Don't park in the lots in front of the palace.
