You can get to this beautiful working buddhist temple by bus from most train stations in Fukui. Look for the kanji 永平寺. This temple is constructed of wood and displays beautiful traditional Japanese Buddhist temple architecture styles. Make sure to take your shoes off at the entrance and put on the slippers provided.

"This ryokan is very dated and in dire need of a refresh. The facilities are not what you would expect from a top end facility in a spa town. The public bath (men’s) felt decades old with soap/salt staining and old fittings. The private baths were a good facility/idea. Most corridors apart from the main lobby area had an unpleasant smell (musty, mouldy). Our room also faintly had this whiff. The staff are great - polite and efficient. Breakfast was good. The free snacks, sale, ice cream buffets were a good idea but don’t expect them to be top quality. The shuttle was handy. And the ryokan is well situated, a short walk away from charming Yamanaka town. Unfortunately I could not recommend this as a place until it has had a make-over. "
