"Possibly the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I didn’t receive the check in instructions, so on arriving had to spend around an hour trying to figure things out. There are no staff at the property and the phone number on their website is incorrect. Room had no bin, no mirror or tea & coffee facilities. This is a basic. "Overall, the property was in good condition and appeared well maintained. Since the check-in process is entirely self-service, I ran into an issue when my key set did not include the main door entrance key. Fortunately, a staff member was available to assist me; otherwise, I would have been locked out. The room had a noticeable moldy smell, and the washroom did not provide any toiletries, which was disappointing. On the positive side, the bed linens and towels were clean, freshly washed, and well presented."

"The castle was absolute perfection. The staff were so helpful, attentive, and professional. The atmosphere and decor were amazing. Our stay in suite 29 is one we won’t soon forget - from the original stone walls to the copper bath tub to the beautiful linens, everything was memorable. The bar and the library were very enjoyable and relaxing. The falconry on the grounds was just fantastic. We would highly recommend this experience."

"Fake tan stains were in the bath from previous guest. Hot water took almost 10mins to come on. Outdoor had a few broken planters and weeds coming through the floor. Kitchen was closed for maintenance so there was no food options until breakfast the next day. I could hear people going in and out their rooms until about 2am and then starting again at 6am. I have stayed previously and was impressed but this time just felt like lack of care was given."

"The location of this hotel is incredibly convenient as its just a 10 minute stroll down to Portobello beach which is so underrated (and long may it stay that way). The property itself is a magnificent old building with plenty of character. Staff couldnt be more helpful, whether that be reception or the leisure staff, they couldn't do enough. Will be using again for the next trip to Edinburgh"

"We called the property to check if it would be ok to arrive at 10pm - after the stated check-in hours. We were told this would be fine. On arriving at 10pm, we were told “we were cutting it fine” and were given the key to the room. Not exactly a warm welcome. The biggest problem is that it is basically a pub and function room with some rooms stuck on top. There is no door separating the function room downstairs for the first floor corridor the rooms are on. There was a party well underway when we arrived. It was almost impossible to watch television, let alone get any sleep. The music went on until midnight but the noise from partygoers continued until the small hours. We had banked on at least getting a night’s sleep for our £130 before an early morning departure and 8 hour drive south. The mattress was poor quality and the divan topped with a plywood repair job - far from comfortable. The tea cups had not been properly washed after the last guests. I wrote to the manager afterwards to suggest they let guests know if they have a party on, so they can decide whether to look elsewhere. Even better, put a couple of doors in so it doesn’t feel you’re attending the party downstairs. No response."
