Terlingua Ranch Lodge
10/10 Excellent
"Place was amazing. Just know what you’re getting into. First off know that you’re off the grid. And there is absolutely zero cell phone signal and while there are certain locations on the ranch that does have Wi-Fi my particular cabin did not. Secondly, you do have to go on a 3 mile dirt road after traveling approximately 13 to 15 miles off the beaten path. I particularly didn’t mind this. In fact this is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a place to where I could shoot photography for the stars a place that was dark and so having an area that was off, the beaten path was exactly what I wanted. They had a restaurant there that had absolutely fantastic food. They also had a pool which I did not use. Apparently, according to what I read, you can fly into there if you should so shall choose. As there is an airfield. When you read about their history, you can take in the fact that they once partnered with the Shelby corporation to establish the Terilinga racing league. There’s a lot of history there. There’s also hiking which I did take part in do so at your own risk.
Outside of the lodge, you’re about 20-40 minutes from Big Bend national Park. There’s also a big bend State park. Furthermore, there’s a Terilinga ghost town which has fantastic ice cream and a place called the starlight theater that had live music too!
Overall, if you know what you’re getting into it’s a wonderful place to go and I quite literally enjoyed my stay there And I am eager to go and return."
"The property is great, very spacious and the beds were comfortable. The facility was clean, overall it was a great stay. The kitchen was well stocked, and had everything we needed. Outside/yard activities were great for our 5 and 8 year old. We got to make s’mores and woke up one night at 3am and got go up the container and were able to see the Milky Way! It was such a great experience. We got to hear the coyotes howling at night, that was a very cool experience. We were a short 45-min-drive away from big bend, the drive into the property was easy to find and had no issues with our jeep wrangler and Nisan kick. We brought all our supplies from Walmart in Del Rio, but found a small convenient store in Terlingua “cottonwood” between the home and big bend that was fully stocked with anything and everything you could possibly imagine from contact solution to electrolytes (for a higher than usual price) but if need be, it’s a great location to find stuff that you might have forgotten. Overall we had a great experience, we had no issues with communication with the host, they provided excellent service, I would def recommend it. "
"What a great place to kick back, watch the amazing stars, watch an abundance of wildlife, and an occasional black bear.
The owners of this property were absolutely top notch with such hospitality. Mark and Michelle were very helpful and knowledgeable about the Big Bend area. It is a little bit of a drive, but trust me, it is well worth it! If you are wanting to experience a true night sky with zero light pollution, this truly is the spot to visit! You wont be disappointed!
Thank you Mark & Michelle!"

Star Lodge: Stunning Solar Home under Dark Skies on Terlingua Ranch
10/10 Excellent
"This was an amazing property in an amazing location! Very isolated but that’s exactly what we wanted. If you’re looking for a relaxing and peaceful getaway, this place is for you. The home was comfortable and had everything we needed. It’s a bit of a bumpy drive to get to it so you’ll definitely want a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I know that we will stay here again in the future."
Casa Tranquilla: Scenic Solar and Wind Powered Home
10/10 Excellent
"The title says it all, there is absolutely no light pollution at Casa Tranquilla!!! I was there with another member of TAAS (The Albuquerque Astronomical Society) and we imaged with our telescopes and brought home over 20 hours of integration. If you know Bortles Class we were pulling down 21.40's-21.62 on our SQM each night putting it at Bortles 2-3. However it felt much dark and there wasn't any part of the sky that was not viewable! If you stay up late and watch the Milky Way Rise it will take your breath away!In terms of Casa Tranquilla it is quaint, simple, and absolutely lovely just as it is. We had some issues with AC while we were there and the owner took care of everything for us in record time considering town was 36 miles away and they had to make three trips to get all the parts sorted out. Before going look at the daily weather not the average. We packed for colder nights as the daily average was 70-80's for the day in April, nope it was like 95-99 the whole time we where there and it broke 100 at least once during April 21-28.Would we go back? Of course we would! We had a fantastic time and enjoyed every moment of it even though staying up each night to image from 1-6am was pretty tough on the body. Thanks again for everything!!!"
