"This was surely the best hotel in town when it opened. Showing signs of wear and tear (but so am I!), but still comfortable like an old sofa. The double room was spacious (by any standard, not just Japan), with room for a desk and chairs. Breakfast buffet was very good. Location overlooking the river, could walk to fish market for excellent sushi. "

We were traveling as a family with one infant and were impressed with how family-friendly the whole experience was, including baby bath supplies at the onsen and special baby seats and tableware at meals. The staff also went above and beyond to accommodate dietary restrictions (vegan) for the kaiseki dinners -- we just had to communicate this beforehand. The Tsukioka Onsen town shuttle also made it easy to get there without needing to rent a car. Highly recommended. "
