"The clean and spacious parking, secure and included in the price, is a major plus point. The full English buffet breakfast is really excellent. Even at the end of the breakfast window, nothing is dry or overcooked, including the eggs. All members of staff were welcoming and helpful. The lounge has a lovely view of the river. Our room and bathroom were comfortable and quiet. The desserts at dinner were wonderful, but the main courses were disappointing, with quite tough meat. Be aware that the minster is a good 15 minute walk away, not 7 minutes as advertised! Even so, this hotel is so well located and managed that it is a pleasure to stay here."

"The hotel is old but has been remodelled and they did a nice job. The bathroom was large and well appointed but there was the start of mould along the bottom and housekeeping should be on top of that. We were also in a ground floor room and the windows opened up onto a side road - we like to sleep with the windows open and there was nothing to prevent anyone from climbing in… sleeping with one eye open doesn’t enhance your experience. The dining room and breakfast were lovely and the staff at reception and in the dining room gave exceptional service."

"We checked into the Grand Royal in York after a dismal experience at another hotel in York. The room, air conditioning, and staff were fabulous. The room was gorgeous, the staff could not have been more helpful, and we looked a mess after a bad experience at another hotel in York, but they treated us with respect and helped us to our room. The breakfast was fantastic, bar and restaurant and spa as well. This is the BEST hotel in York!"
