Henkes Jenever distillery ‘De Ooyevaar’

On 23 October 1824 founded Johannes Hermanus Henkes, Arie de Jong and Gerke d'Arnoud Gerkens a gin distillery on the outer port in delfshaven on and gave it the name "De Ooijevaar".
The distillery was established in an old roaster, which together with the boilers and other installations shortly for its creation was purchased. For grinding of the barley, used as raw material for making Gin served, made the distillers use the wind malt mill "De distilleerketel", which is still in the historic delfshaven.
The De Ooijevaar was founded in a time where the Gin industry was recovering from the economic crisis during the French time. Despite the tough time the company grew quickly, it expanded in 1827 with a third distilling vessel and it was the first company in delfshaven in 1850 that made use of a steam engine to power the machines and installations. In 1852, the distillery by the death of Gabriel and early departure of Daniel in full ownership of Henkes. In the 50s and 60s of the 19th century he had the old buildings gradually replaced by current distillery building, completed in 1867 that whole and nowadays so it is called Henkespand.
