Newark Castle Newark Castle is a rectangular tower with 3m thick walls, first mentioned in 1423, and standing on a natural stronghold, reinforced by a 16th century barmkin. The castle was passed back to the Crown in 1445 from the Earls of Douglas and became one of only two royal castles in the Middle March, serving both as an estate centre for Ettrick Forest and a hunting retreat. In 1547-8, the English took the barmkin, burnt the stables, but could not take the house. They came back the next year and did so. "I can't say enough about this place. Our stay was exceptional and revitalizing; If you're looking for quiet and solitude this is the place to go. You can hear bird chirping, no road noise, and the gardens are beautiful. The food was fantastic. I can't say enough about the staff. They are amazing and everything you wished a hotel staff would be. They catered to us like we were the only ones there. If you want a quiet place to go to after a day exploring the Borderlands in Scotland; this is the place. Even if you just want a place to relax and unwind for a few days this is a great place to go.
