Countryside retreat with stunning views & pool
Old Stables is a grand house in the middle of the Chew Valley, overlooking the stunning Mendip foothills. Old Stables boast access to a heated indoor swimming pool with a hot tub, steam room & changing rooms. There are four luxury bedrooms, three are en-suite, comfortably sleeping eight people with additional small pull-out beds for three, plus a pair of sofa beds for four more in our spacious reception rooms.
Pictures don't do Old Stables justice, this situation is breathtaking!
To the left of the front door are two reception rooms, the breathtaking Garden Room with a Knowle sofa bed, a chaise longe, a pair of sofas, a pair of round tables and a highly polished, Victorian sideboard. The spacious Sitting Room has a pair of sofas, of which one is a sofa bed. There is a large 4K TV with a Wii, Android TV box and a Blu-ray player. Both rooms have French doors that lead to the garden.
Opposite the front door is a flight of stairs taking you to 3 luxury en-suite bedrooms. The largest is Chestnut - a super-king bed with a bijou pull-out bed, with a superb bathroom containing a freestanding slipper bath, walk-in shower and his 'n' hers basins. The next largest, Oak, has a super-king bed with a bijou pull-out bed. Oak's en-suite is a shower room. The cosy Silver Birch has a double bed and the en-suite has a freestanding bath and a separate shower.
Going to the right of the front door leads you to Damson, a small bedroom with full size bunk-beds and a bijou pull-out bed. There is access to a downstairs washroom.
The kitchen is extremely large with hand-made wooden units, granite worktop, slate floor, a 7 burner Smeg range, a dishwasher and a wooden dining table that comfortably seats 8. There is additional seating around the central island that seats 8 more. There are French doors leading to the patio overlooking the landscaped garden. The kitchen also leads to the shared laundry room which has a pair of washing machines, a pair of dryers and an additional dishwasher for those large parties!
In our grounds you will find a 200-year-old converted stables, a Georgian horse wash, a well, and a purpose built swimming pool. The pool complex houses a ten-metre swimming pool with a "Fluvo jet" to exercise against, a hot tub which takes 5 people (at a squeeze) a shower and steam cubicle, robes, slippers, spa towels, hair dryer. The temperature of the pool is 88 °F / 31 °C and the temperature of the hot tub is 101 °F / 38 °C. FAMILY WEEKEND AWAY
The Old Stables was perfect for our multi generation family weekend away. The flexibility of the sleeping arrangements allowed everyone to have the space they needed. The beds were very comfortable and the whole place was nicely furnished. We particularly liked the size and arrangement of the kitchen, which was great for family cooking of the meals and the cleaning up afterwards. The outdoor space was great for the children to run around in and the location, immersed in the green, had breath taking views. The pool was the biggest reason we booked the Old Stables and it didn’t disappoint. The water was warm which meant the children could spend a couple of hours in the pool without feeling chilled. The whole family enjoyed the jacuzzi, and the steam room was a nice touch. I was impressed by the number of towels and gowns available. I would, without doubt, recommend the Old Stables as a great place to stay and we are hoping to return for a longer time in the near future.
Great time at Old Stables. Beautiful view and surroundings in fab location. Really well and thoughtfully kitted out holiday home with extras such as fans for each room , logs for fire, games , WII for the teenagers and beautiful clean pool. For a large party there was plenty of crockery, glasses, cookware and cooking appliances. Beds very comfortable and en-suites beautifully laid out . Would highly recommend.
The house was a perfect setting for our birthday celebration. Overall, we had a fantastic week, the views and grounds are absolutely incredible, the pool area is great, we thoroughly enjoyed cooking together in the large kitchen, and everyone commented on how comfortable the beds were. There were a couple of very minor issues like the oven/hob not working perfectly but nothing that we couldn't work around or ask to be sorted. Piers was quick to respond to any queries. Thank you Piers and family for a wonderful week.
Great property; spacious, plenty of character and well equipped. Plus the view is outstanding, just like the picture!
The property was generally very clean, but we found a few random things under the sofa and behind the coat stand which had been left by previous occupants. The bbq was also left in an unclean state. Minor issues in a generally very clean place.
The pool was fantastic and makes this property great value. It’s a good size for a family, warm, and the booking system works well to ensure you get the place to yourself. Towels and dressing gowns are provided for the 2 minute walk between house and pool.
The owner was on hand to deal with any issues and was quick to respond to queries by email.
There didn’t seem to be a huge amount in the immediate (walkable) area, but there are plenty of interesting places to see and restaurants to eat at a short drive away. A couple of the better/smaller restaurants need to be booked in advance, and taxis are a little tricky to come by at short notice too. A good base for Bath and the Mendips.
Overall great value and highly recommended!
