"An elegant comfortable building opposite the park. We had a quiet room (2) at the back of the building with an opening single glazed sash window. No view but we knew that and were grateful for the upgrade to be away from any traffic noise. There was a recess with a rail for hanging clothes but no drawers which would have been useful, but there was a suitcase stand. Free parking. Reception was efficient, helpful and friendly. Good wifi. The ladies serving at breakfast, Joanna & Jan, were delightful and very friendly. The over bath shower handset holder wouldn’t stay still but otherwise it was good. There was a soap recess on the basin – a rarity on modern sinks, but no hooks in the bathroom for hanging clothes. A big mirror had a shaving point beside it. There was a radiator in the bedroom but the heated towel rail in the bathroom didn’t work. The grouting between the floor tiles was messy. The room was nicely decorated with a decent double bed with sockets either side. It had a kettle, tea, coffee etc. Breakfast offerings included cereals, fruits, yoghurts, ham, cheese, cakes(!) and a choice of cooked items. Rooms were only serviced on request which was fine. There was a reassuring recent fire alarm system which went off when someone opened the bathroom door after showering before the steam had cleared but not sure if the escape route plan in our room was up to date. Our bathroom had a good extractor fan. The TV worked without difficulty. Remarkably good value for money."

Lakes Hotel and Spa

"Room was clean, towels were not changed daily and tea/coffee facilities were not replenished every day, luckily I had taken my own. Staff very friendly, breakfast was good with lots to choose from. Pool area was good main pool was bright but a bit dark and dangerous in areas, the hot tub was not very clean or clear you could not see the steps to get in, needs lighting to see where you are going, health a safety hazard. Nice to have a bar on the poolside, and it stayed open till late. Lots of people in the on-site pub in bathrobes eating and drinking as you had to go through pub to get to the pool. Good in the pub had a good variety to choose from reasonable priced. All in all it was a nice hotel and a pleasant stay, but the pool area definitely needs to a bit brighter to see where you are going."

"Lovely hotel in beautiful setting. We chose a deluxe double and had a view of the lake/mountains. Food was good. Staff were very friendly including Sophia on reception who was very helpful."
Merewood Country House

"I reported the following: upon arrival excellent welcome, the room wardrobe had the laminate on one of the doors ripped and could easily have come off or cause an injury ( on the hand) whilst sliding open, a few hairs were also found, on the desk. I received a sorry about that but nothing else happened. The bar had a bell service due to lack of staff or guests which sometimes entailed a wait to be served. The hotel itself is historic and great setting / location. It rained each day so not good to see the scenery , not the hotels fault though. The evening food choice was very limited but they can cater for the options with the à la carte restaurant. It was cold in the main restaurant, after guests ( my wife & brothers wife) complained it was fixed the next day, however it ruined the evening eating with coats on! Overall for wedding it’s expensive even though it was quiet. I would not rush back here from Brighton though"

"We had room 310 it where there are some sort of blowers air con also a fire door is left open and the staff use it come come in and out but the hotel is a great place to stop apart from this"

"Hotel and location lovely. We were just slightly disappointed in the spa, after a long day walking we were looking forward to relaxing in the spa with a jacuzzi/ hot tub but there was only a pool."
