Like many towns it's suffered due to the economic downturn of the last few years but has some really great things about it too, an abundance of maritime museums, great costal walks, some lovely little seafood eatery's a good place for a short break

Loads going on in Portsmouth or Pompie as the locals call it, great access to trains and ferries to the Isle of Wight, all the best shops if you are into your fancy labels are close by at Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth is well worth a visit.
