About this property

The Bumbleshack Creekside Tiny House in an Old Forest of Tuckasegee, NC

  • Now you can book a stay in the Bumbleshack tiny house, a pioneer of the tiny house movement!

Parked in her retirement spot above a cascading mountain creek with big boulders on 8 1/2 private, heavily forested acres, this is nature immersion at its best.

Plus your stay supports our nonprofit orchard supplying local food banks!

WNC parents and wedding attendees at Bear Lake Reserve & Castle Ladyhawke - we are very close to these things, but please read the entire listing before booking.

    The space
This is not your typical vacation rental. Adventure seekers ONLY!!!

Sleep: double (full) loft bed accessed by a ladder + double (full) pull-out sofa; two people only despite the two beds, and y'all should be real friendly with each other!

Kitchenette: mini-fridge, 4 burner cooktop, small oven, basic cookware and essentials like oil, vinegar and spices, dishes, electric hot water kettle and a Keurig

Comfort: heating/air conditioning, Wi-Fi, television with access to your favorite entertainment apps, NO cell phone service in this area - we use satellite Wi-Fi for communication

Outdoors: covered patio with dining area for two, small propane grill, fire pit, chairs, string lights and your own personal trail that encircles the property along the cascading creek

Composting toilet indoors, outdoor HOT shower (not available December through February/March depending on the weather)

Extras: guides to our favorite lake put-ins & river floats and use of our kayaks and river tubes at your own risk.

Pet-friendly: well-behaved pups welcome, be cautious of wildlife activity (bears)

    Guest access
You’ll have the tiny house, patio, and the entire back portion of the property all to yourselves. We live in the main house and have the front portion of the property to ourselves. Kayaks (with paddles & life jackets) and river tubes are available for guest use at no charge and at your own risk.

Parking is right next to the tiny house, and there is only room for one vehicle.

The creek is reached via a trail up the mountain, and there is a sitting area with chairs.

This property cannot accommodate small children due to the ladder to the loft and the terrain of the land. You agree to hold us harmless. We are a nonprofit farm and exempt from agritourism liability.

WNC parents and wedding guests of Castle Ladyhawke and Bear Lake Reserve...we are very close to all of these things, but please make sure you are able to climb a ladder and have no issues with using a composting toilet, an outdoor shower and navigating a bumpy dirt road.

    Where you’ll be!

Tuckasegee, North Carolina: a peaceful mountain valley wrapped in forests, lakes, and the Tuckasegee River—perfect for paddling, fishing, swimming, and leaf-peeping. Lake Glenville and Bear Creek Lake—the closest lakes—offer scenic coves and calm water.

Sylva (nearby): a classic Appalachian small town with a walkable Main Street, indie shops and bookstores, coffee spots, local breweries, and laid-back eateries. It’s your easy stop for groceries, farm-to-table bites, live music and weekend buzz.

    What to do!

On the water: paddle Lake Glenville or Bear Lake (we’ll point you to scenic put-ins)

River float: tube the Tuckasegee on mild days (seasonal)

Trails & views: waterfalls and Blue Ridge hikes within a short drive or short, private hiking on the property itself

Town time: browse Sylva’s boutiques, murals, local beer scene and yummy restaurants; we will send you a list of our favorites once you book; Asheville and everything it has to offer is one hour away

    Other things to note:

Safety: Life jackets are required with kayaks; use tubes only at safe water levels and in daylight. You’re responsible for your own safety, and you agree to hold us harmless.

Pets: Please leash on the property or keep a close eye on your pupper due to wildlife interactions.

Sound: The creek is a constant, soothing presence (not silent).

Access: All or four wheel drive not necessary but absolutely recommended; standard cars do fine in normal conditions on the dirt road leading to the property, but it is BUMPY and rough. Obviously, this means if you drive a low profile car, we suggest you reconsider booking with us. We will contact you if there are snowy or icy conditions present. You agree to hold us harmless.

Stewardship: Please respect the property, and leave no trace. Ethical foraging allowed.

    House rules:
Registered guests only, and quiet hours are 24/7 here in this peaceful haven. Only one car allowed. Be kind to the space and to nature—leave it as you found it. Ethical foraging and collecting allowed.

This property cannot accommodate small children or handicapped guests due to the stairs into the tiny house, the ladder to the loft and the terrain of the land.

I couldn’t imagine a better place for me and my dog to stay. Beautiful location tucked up the hill along a creek. Very quiet and peaceful. I really enjoyed the short hiking trail to the creek-side chairs. The tiny house is well designed, decorated with cool art and had high quality amenities. I spent most of my time outside at the patio and fire pit space. Internet was good and I also enjoyed taking an outdoor shower. Lisa gave great check-in directions and is such a kind and considerate host. This is a very scenic area with a lot of outdoor activities. I was visiting to attend a wedding, but I could have easily filled a week or more with hikes, especially to the numerous waterfalls and swimming holes.I highly recommend the Bumbleshack and would love to visit again. It was the perfect place for getting in touch with nature and for a distraction-free departure from my normal life.

We loved our time in the bumble shack! We enjoyed being surrounded by trees and listening to the rain while we drank our coffee under the awning. The loft was cozy and comfortable and the outdoor shower very refreshing.

Its *real* tiny, so be ready for that. Driveway and parking were rather small too but doable. Listing is very complete, and house has lots of cool little features.

The bumbleshack was the perfect place for us to spend a weekend exploring the local lakes and trails. You could even spend the day roaming the property experiencing the creeks and wildlife. Lisa and Jonathan were the most welcoming hosts and you can tell they have poured their heart and souls into the cool vibes you get at this unique location. We even brought home several pieces of Lisa’s own nature inspired artwork that she has decorated the bumbleshack with. The place was privately secluded( but still has WiFi ) , clean , very cute and so close to so much breathtaking scenery. They really made the most out of this space because it has everything you need. Exceeded expectations in every way possible. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. We will certainly be back!
