My husband and I had an outstanding stay at the Viceroy in Riveria Maya...incredible service at the highest level, quiet, peaceful and was the perfect place to unwind. I have traveled around the world and have stayed at all of the top resorts, including the Four Seasons, Auberge, Ritz Carlton, The Peninsula, Ranch at Rock Creek, etc. I cannot say enough about the staff and how they made us feel. Their outlook on life and how they love this property is something that I have never witnessed before. Unfortunately they are closing end of April 2026 for a full remodel and will not be opening again until spring of 2027. I highly recommend getting there before they close!
Romantic, private beautiful accommodations. We especially enjoyed the private pool and the outdoor shower. The attentive service made our stay wonderful.
Service was EXCELLENT. We arrived to Cancún realizing our checked bag had been robbed of some sentimental and valuable items. The Viceroy staff set our trip back on the right trajectory and then some. The resort is intimate, tractable, and most of all… relaxing. It was exactly what we needed to start our trip. We were sad to leave.
Highly recommend!
Our stay was incredible. We went for a Babymoon and it was everything we wanted. The vibe was the most Chill. If you are going to party, this is not the spot for you. The resort was calm and quiet, exactly what we were looking for. We had the private Villa and it was the definition of privacy. They do an excellent job of making sure there isn’t a single spot that could look into our Villa or outdoor lounging area. We spent the majority of our time out there relaxing either on the comfortable lounging couch or in the plunge pool. The staff were so kind and respectful, after the first day, they remembered our names and our villa number. They did a great job of communicating with each other so that while we were at breakfast or dinner, the housekeepers would tidy up while we were out. The food was very good as well. I highly recommend the all-inclusive package. We saved money on dinning and drinks because of it and it made the whole stay so convenient.
We will definitely be going back.
This resort was superb from the moment we arrived to tequila shots of local tequila to hand cut handmade soaps.
The food was exquisite and was served by extremely friendly staff. Thank you for making my trip with my daughter and niece so special before my daughter’s wedding!! I’ll be back!
Small boutique property with beautiful grounds, excellent service, spacious and very private villas with private pools. It is best for very quiet, relaxing, secluded type of vacations, even though Playa del Carmen is only a short taxi drive away. I think they strike a great balance between eco friendliness, nature and comfort. They have a very nice SPA as well
This hotel is quaint and adorable for a quiet couples trip. The staff and service is impeccable. They are so very kind and attentive to every detail. The villas and very private and the grounds are lush jungle and really lovely
The resort is quiet and hidden for those looking for privacy. The facilities and amenities were top notch and well taken care of; the staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.
Second time staying. It is quite beautiful and unique, and you feel like a million bucks staying there. Impeccable cleanliness and upkeep. Very high ancillary prices in restaurants, minibar and spa. Remote location with little to walk to to buy snacks and sundries -- you are at the mercy of the very expensive minibar and the on-site boutique offers very little of a practical nature.
We had such a lovely stay at the Viceroy and will definitely be back. Beautiful property. VERY quiet and private. If you’re looking for a private escape into luxury…. This is it! And the staff was really incredible.
The only two things that weren’t clear in other reviews that would have been helpful for vacation planning:
You are a good 15-20 minute cab ride from Playa Del Carmen and it’s a standard $400 pesos each way.
There is no where else to eat nearby except the resort (which does have good food - I’m obsessed with their coconut lemongrass drink!), but there are no options at the viceroy that aren’t expensive. So you have to take your $800 pesos cab to and from Playa to grab dinner.
We seldom stay on property when we travel, choosing to venture out and explore. This trip, our plans were different.
We just needed to chill and we’re so happy we chose The Viceroy to do so. The property is incredible. The villas are private and intimate. Natural vibes all around.
But two specific things were just outstanding and noteworthy.
Firstly, the food. Everything we ate was remarkable. Like trying to deconstruct the ingredients so we could cook it at home remarkable. In four days of meals there wasn’t a single thing we ate, or sipped, that wasn’t delicious.
But above all was the service. The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and so attentive that it elevated our experience beyond our expectations. We felt the love.
10/10. We’ll be back again.
I just got home from Viceroy last night - I loved the quiet atmosphere of the resort, but at times it seemed too quiet. I’m not sure if it was the time of year I went, but there was at most 3 other people out at the pool/beach. It was raining off and on, so maybe that’s why too. Otherwise, the service and staff were amazing and went above and beyond every single interaction. The walking distance from my room to the common areas was not bad at all and the hotel has many umbrella stations around for when it is raining. There are a lot of animals, granted it is in the jungle, but there were multiple around the plunge pool, very frequently throughout the day. The food and drinks were okay, not bad, but I have had better at other resorts. Overall, I would go back, but maybe a different time of year with (hopefully) better weather since it rained literally every day of my stay.
The setting is tranquil, the villas are well designed, very large, and private. The staff are incredibly attentive, polite, personalble, intuitive, professional and take pride in what they do. This was a one week getaway for my wife and I to celebrate her birthday and generally unwind. This is our 8th time to the area and our taste has evolved from the big resorts that cater to everyone to the small boutique resorts such as Viceroy. We appreciate the personal attention we received by all, from Alberto's welcome upon arrival, to Christina and her teams perfection in the kitchen, to sommelier Carlos(1)' expertise, with waiters Pablo & Carlos(2)' attention (honorable mention to Mario) in the main dining restaurant "La Marea". Abner, Victor, Jesus, and Fransisco were spot on in the "Coral Restarurant & Bar". Jose, Juan, and Pepe were kickin' it poolside with snack, lounger, sunglass, chilled towel, and drink service. We'll not soon forget the salsa dance lessons put together by Alberto & Carla just for my wife on her birthday, from a simple mention my wife made to Pablo and Carlos a day prior. I don't know how we're going top this one... perhaps only by a second visit.

Liked: Cleanliness
The Viceroy itself is stunning and the staff was attentive—no complaints there. However, several aspects made this trip less enjoyable for us, though others may feel differently.
1. Inflated Prices
Pricing was extreme—a small bottle of water was $20. Without the all-inclusive plan, food and beverage costs felt unjustifiable. Menu options were limited and lacked flavor.
2. Noise from Nearby Properties
While not within Viceroy’s control, loud parties from a neighboring resort disrupted our nights. The music was intense enough to shake the walls—challenging for those seeking a peaceful escape.
3. Area Atmosphere
We expected a refined experience south of Cancun but found the vibe across the region geared more toward spring-break energy. It felt misaligned with our expectations.
4. Seaweed and Beach Conditions
The beach was unusable due to heavy seaweed during our visit (March–October season). Swimming wasn’t an option, limiting us to the pool.
5. Lack of Local Alternatives
Renting a car didn’t help. The surrounding area felt neglected—dusty streets, unpleasant odors, and nowhere comfortable to walk or dine. The beach was narrow and crowded.
Bottom Line: The resort is lovely, but the environment around it made the experience fall short. If you’re looking for quiet luxury, better dining variety, and swimmable beaches, this may not be the best choice.
When I first booked this trip, I noticed some mixed reviews that I’d like to address. My experience was outstanding! The location is beautiful and peaceful, yet welcoming. You truly feel immersed in the jungle. The rooms are more spacious and comfortable than typical resort rooms.
I was initially concerned about the beach being described as rocky, fearing it might be unusable. However, the ocean was very close and perfectly enjoyable. While there are some rocks, it didn’t hinder my ability to relax and soak in the waves. Additionally, a short walk down the beach offers a different experience if desired.
Another review mentioned mosquitos as an issue. Expecting the resort to control mosquitos is like expecting a hotel in Seattle to control the rain. Yes, there are bugs in the jungle, but the resort provides ample mosquito repellent.
One reviewer complained about a long uphill walk at the resort, but I found everything to be easily accessible. There was a slight uphill climb for about 20 yards, which is hardly worth mentioning. Compared to other resorts where I’ve had to walk 20 minutes to get food, navigating this resort was a breeze, and the surroundings are incredibly beautiful.
Finally, I really enjoyed the food. Yes, it’s expensive to eat and drink, but that’s expected at a non-inclusive resort. Frankly, I’ve stayed at similar places, and the experience here was worth every penny.
Alberto and others made the the experience so easy. I'd absolutely go again.
We had a fantastic stay at the Viceroy. From the moment we arrived it was first class the entire time. We used the resort car service which was nice to not have to hassle with the taxis when we arrived at the airport. Straight through the chaos, to our car and away we went.
Greeted with drinks and quick lay of the land and shown to our bungalow after the financials were handled. Could not have been happier with #34. It was off the main path, plenty of privacy and extremely clean. Great plunge pool was used daily/nightly. Hammock needs changed as the ends were too close and couldn’t lay back.
Room was amazing. No complaints. Clean, cool and comfortable. Outdoor shower was exceptional and almost every shower was taken outdoors. Entire setup was perfect we really felt like we were there alone.
Food was very good. Menu selections had a nice variety. My girlfriend is a vegetarian so I was a little worried about finding options for here but wait staff understood and were helpful in making sure she had choices.
Beach was the least impressive of the entire facility. It was nice but not great and was rocky as other reviews suggest. Would not go for the beach specifically but pool area was great.
All staff were amazing and extremely helpful. Could not have been happier and it didn’t feel forced.
Bottom line is we will be back and excited for another trip. You won’t be disappointed.
Could be a bit noisy on the weekends from neighbor resort. It was on Friday.
