"Spent a wonderful couple of days at 40 winks hotel. Room was very comfortable, great location for walking around Durham. Breakfast was excellent, freshly cooked and served hot. Will definitely return. All staff very friendly and welcoming."

"Friendly efficient local staff. Excellent breakfast and restaurant food especially the daily specials. Housekeeping excellent. Rooms functional but a bit dated.Parking directly outside courtyard rooms is a bonus for any disabled visitors and access to the main entrance is easy. The city of Durham ,Beamish Museum and The Auckland Project are all within less than half an hour’s drive. Although just off a busy road the courtyard rooms are quiet with a rural view at the rear . I would use this hotel again. "

"I can not recommend this place highly enough. Sheer luxury. The bed was so comfortable, we literally just sank into it. The bath was also amazing, much bigger than it appears in the photos. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were allowed to explore the castle as and when we liked. It is definitely worth paying the extra for breakfast, there was a continental breakfast buffet, with pastries, meats, cheese and fruits. After that you also get to order a cooked breakfast. Plenty of gluten free options, just ask and the staff will be more than happy to help. There was plenty of onsight parking, which is completely free. There was a bar open in the evening and an onsight restaurant, but we didnt use these so can not review them. They looked cosy as we walked past. "

"We arrived late so unfortunately didn’t get to experience the food but the bar and restaurant was lovely and we only wish we could have spent more time here. The decor is amazing. Rooms were large and comfortable and had everything we needed. Breakfast was amazing and the staff were very helpful."

"This is a hotel with real character. Built as a civic building in 1905, the hotel owner totally renovated the guest rooms but retained the beautiful interiors along the corridors, in the restaurant, etc. In the guest rooms, there is a rarity -- lots of electrical outlets! Also, as this building was built solid, guest rooms are quiet -- you hear nothing from the next room. All the staff (check in, restaurant, cleaners) were very helpful and pleasant. I would stay here again. "

"Beautiful hotel and fabulous surrounding gardens. Excellent food and service in the stables. Very large car park and less than a mile from the Beamish museum. Would definitely stay here again."
