During the 18th century there was a tradition, that on the first Friday in July, a large number of East Enders would travel to Fairlop to eat a meal of bacon and beans beneath as well as partake in general celebrations beneath an ancient oak tree. By the 1750s it was estimated that over 100,000 people could be expected to attend. The original oak blew down in 1820 and the celebration declined, perhaps as a result of licensing laws. The New Fairlop Oak was planted in 1951 and sits in the middle of Fullwell Cross roundabout. The building behind is the Fullwell Cross library.

"- Bedbugs infestation - do not go to this hotel. - I was at the hotel for 3 nights and changed rooms 3 times. I captured the bugs in a bag and showed receptionists and management, the bugs, and my bites all over my body. They disregarded my complaint and refused me a refund. The manager refused to speak to me and would only communicate through reception staff. The hotel is dirty and had to throw clothes and suitcase away because it was ridden with bugs. "Great location and paid extra for a Tower Bridge view. At 1am the bridge opened and was entertaining. Unfortunately the builders were close by and noisy, can see why they are there as the room was very tired. However we had a great time so put up with it."
